Types of Silk Fabric: Chiffon, Charmeuse & Crepe de Chine Explained
When buyers source silk fabric, "silk" is not one material — it is an entire family of weaves, weights and finishes. Choosing the right silk fabric for your product makes the difference between a luxury scarf that sells and a costly inventory mistake. In this guide we break down the most common silk fabrics you will meet in the export market.
The Silk Fabric Family at a Glance
- Silk Chiffon — sheer, lightweight, floaty
- Silk Charmeuse — shiny satin face, matte back
- Silk Crepe de Chine — matte, textured, medium weight
- Silk Satin — heavy, full-bodied, high shine
- Silk Organza — crisp, transparent, structured
1. Silk Chiffon
Silk chiffon is a plain-weave fabric made from highly twisted yarns. It is lightweight (typically 8–12 momme), sheer and slightly stiff to the touch, with a graceful drape.
Best for
- Summer scarves and shawls
- Evening wear, blouses, lingerie
- Layers and overlays on dresses
2. Silk Charmeuse
Charmeuse is a satin-weave silk: one side is glossy and smooth, the other is matte. It is the fabric most people picture when they think of "luxury silk". Weights commonly range from 16 to 22 momme.
Best for
- Classic printed silk scarves
- Slips, nightgowns, linings
- High-end dresses and blouses
3. Silk Crepe de Chine (CDC)
Crepe de Chine is woven with highly twisted crepe yarns on both sides. The result is a matte, finely pebbled surface that hides wrinkles and drapes beautifully. Weights 12–16 momme.
Best for
- Daily-wear scarves (less delicate than charmeuse)
- Blouses, shirts, trousers
- Travel and cruise wear — wrinkle-resistant
4. Silk Satin
Silk satin is the heaviest, shiniest member of the family — 19–30 momme. It holds its shape, has a luxurious hand and a deep luster.
Best for
- Evening gowns and bridal wear
- Premium scarves and stoles
- Home textiles: pillow covers, bedding
5. Silk Organza
Organza is a plain-weave silk that is sheer but crisp — it holds structure better than chiffon. It is used where body and transparency are both required.
Best for
- Evening skirts and overskirts
- Bridal veils and ribbons
- Accessories: bags, hair pieces
How to Choose the Right Silk Fabric
Ask yourself three questions:
- What is the product? Scarf? Dress? Blouse? Each has a default fabric.
- Who is the customer? Price-sensitive entry buyers lean to CDC and chiffon; luxury buyers expect charmeuse and satin.
- What weight? 8–12 momme for summer, 16–22 momme for year-round scarves, 19+ for heavy premium pieces.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing "silk touch" polyester with real silk. Always burn-test or send to a lab.
- Ordering full production before checking a hand-loom or mill sample.
- Ignoring shrinkage: pre-washed silk fabric shrinks less in the final garment.
