Understanding silk weight — 12mm to 22mm and beyond

If you're buying silk fabric, you've probably seen terms like "16 momme habotai" or "22 momme satin." But what exactly does "momme" mean, and how do you choose the right weight for your project?

What Is Momme?

Momme (mm) is the standard unit used to measure silk fabric weight. One momme equals 4.34 grams per square meter. So:

12 momme = ~52 g/m² (lightweight)
16 momme = ~70 g/m² (medium)
19 momme = ~82 g/m² (medium-heavy)
22 momme = ~96 g/m² (heavy)

The higher the momme number, the thicker, denser, and more durable the silk fabric.

Which Momme Should You Choose?

For scarves: 14–16 momme is the sweet spot. Light enough to drape beautifully, substantial enough to hold its shape. Habotai and twill at 16 momme are our most popular scarf materials.

For apparel (blouses, dresses): 16–19 momme. Chiffon at 16mm works beautifully for flowy garments. Satin at 19–22mm gives an elegant, structured look.

For lining: 12–14 momme habotai is ideal. It's lightweight, smooth, and lets outerwear glide easily.

Does Higher Momme Always Mean Better Quality?

Not necessarily. Momme measures weight, not quality. A well-woven 16 momme habotai from good silk yarn will outlast a poorly woven 22 momme fabric. What matters most:

Silk type: Mulberry silk is the highest grade
Yarn quality: Long-strand yarns produce smoother fabric
Weaving consistency: Even density, no skips or defects
Dyeing: Color fastness and even penetration
