How to Identify Real Silk from Fake: 6 Tests That Actually Work

"Silk" labels are everywhere, and a huge share of what is sold online is actually polyester. As a buyer, you cannot rely on labels. Here are six simple tests you can run at home or in the showroom to separate real silk from the fake.

1. The Burn Test (most reliable)

Pull a single loose thread and burn it with a lighter.

• Real silk: smells like burnt hair, leaves a soft black ash that crumbles between your fingers. It self-extinguishes.
• Polyester fake: melts into a hard black bead, smells chemical/plastic, keeps burning.
• Viscose/rayon: smells like burning paper, leaves fine gray ash.

Always test on a hidden thread — this is the only test that damages the fabric.

2. The Rub Test (hand feel)

Crumple a handful of silk in your palm and rub it hard. Real silk generates a faint, characteristic sound — the so-called "silk chirp" — when rubbed, and feels cool against the skin. Polyester feels warm and makes no sound.

3. The Luster Test

Hold the fabric to the light and tilt it slowly. Real silk has a deep, pearly, iridescent sheen that shifts as the angle changes. Polyester "silk" looks flat and glassy — the shine is uniform, not alive.

4. The Wrinkle Test

Squeeze the fabric tightly in your fist for a few seconds and release.

• Real silk: wrinkles appear but relax back quickly.
• Polyester: barely wrinkles at all (a tell-tale sign it is fake).
• Cotton/rayon: stays deeply wrinkled.

5. The Weight & Drape Test

Real silk has a fluid, weighty drape. Let a scarf hang over your hand — it falls in smooth, natural folds. Polyester feels lighter, stiffer and "crisper."

6. The Price Test (always apply common sense)

Grade A mulberry silk costs several dollars per meter to a manufacturer. If a listing promises "100% pure silk scarf" for $2 CIF, it is not silk. Real silk has a price floor — learn it before you source.

Bottom line

No single visual check is perfect, but two or three tests combined will tell you almost everything. If you are sourcing scarves or silk fabric for your brand, always test physical samples — photographs and labels can lie, a flame cannot.
