How to Care for Silk Scarves: Washing & Storage Guide

A quality silk scarf can last decades if you treat it right. But silk is delicate — hot water, harsh detergent, or hanging it wrong can ruin it. As a silk manufacturer since 2012, here's exactly how we recommend you care for your scarves.

Washing: Hand Wash Is Best

Step 1: Fill a clean basin with lukewarm water (30°C / 86°F — about body temperature).

Step 2: Add a tiny amount of mild detergent — baby shampoo or a specialized silk wash works best. Avoid regular laundry detergent, bleach, or fabric softener.

Step 3: Submerge the scarf and gently swish it for 2-3 minutes. Do NOT scrub, wring, or twist — this damages the fibers.

Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with cool water until no soap remains.

⚠️ Never machine wash or dry clean unless the label says so. Dry cleaning chemicals can weaken silk over time. Machine agitation will snag and pull the fabric.

Drying the Right Way

Lay the scarf flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up gently to press out excess water — don't twist or wring. Then unroll and lay the scarf flat on another dry towel, reshaping it to its original form. Let it air dry away from direct sunlight (sunlight fades silk).

Ironing: Low Heat Only

If your scarf is wrinkled, iron it on the lowest silk setting. Always iron on the back side of the fabric, and place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the silk to protect the sheen. Never use steam — water spots are hard to remove from silk.

Storage: Fold, Don't Hang

Do not hang silk scarves. Hanging stretches the fabric and creates permanent hanger marks. Instead:

1. Fold the scarf neatly and store it in a drawer or on a shelf.

2. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

3. Don't store it in plastic — silk needs to breathe. Use a cotton pillowcase or acid-free tissue paper.

4. Add a lavender sachet or cedar block to repel moths (but don't let it touch the silk directly).

✨ Pro tip: If your scarf gets a wrinkle or crease, hang it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower — the steam gently removes wrinkles without any risk.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Perfume on silk: Spray perfume before putting on your scarf, not after. Alcohol in perfume stains and dries out silk.

Sweat exposure: Don't wear your favorite silk scarf on a hot, sweaty day. Sweat can discolor silk over time.

Velcro and jewelry: Be careful with rough jewelry, watches, or velcro — they can snag silk fibers.
