India: CCI acquisition is not in place small cotton farmers suffer
Indian cotton farmers say they are facing difficulties because the Cotton Company of India (CCI) is not buying. As a result, they are forced to sell their products to private traders at much lower prices than the MSP(Rs 5,300 to Rs 5,600).
Small farmers in India are selling cotton to private traders because they pay cash, but larger farmers fear they will lose a lot if they sell at lower prices.According to the farmers, private traders offer prices of Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,600 / quart depending on the quality of cotton compared to Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 / quart last year.Farmers say the CCI does not give any relief to the percentage of moisture in the cotton.
Agriculture ministry officials have advised farmers to dry cotton to below 12% moisture content before sending it to CCI and other purchasing centres, which will help them get MSP per Rs 5,550 / ql.The official also said nearly half a million acres of cotton were planted in the state this season.
